• What's Behind the Name

If I had a chance to re-name my name, probably I would choose the modern one, or the great one that tend to be like western or global. For instance, George, Michael, or anything of name that people give good impression when heard the name. However, God has already put me in a reverse world. I was born in Sundanese family. At first, I felt like that something kinda awful to mention that name. My name is Acep Kholid Kusaeni. I preferably mention Kholid instead of Acep as the nick name. Yet, almost all friends, family, and the surroundings called me Acep. Hence, I started to get used to it.

I never thought of going to international school or college before. I went to Islamic boarding school for the junior high. Its purely Islamic, even though that particular school aims to have bilingual language. In fact, my junior high obliged the students to speak either Arabic or English. Yet most of the students were more into the Arabic. It had no wonder since almost the full-time teacher graduated from Gontor, the popular Islamic school that create graduates with fluent Arabic language. Do not expect me that I am a very Islamic person because graduated from such Islamic school and very fluent in Arabic Language. To be honest, I am a kinda good coward. I always speak in Sundanese with my roommates and classmates, but I tried to speak Arabic and English when talking to the senior, Language Ranger, and Spy cause I know if I didn’t, it would like a very tough consequences later on. Why I said that was good coward? Because I don’t wanna either Arabic or English took over the traditional language and slowly vanishing the language. I speak Sundanese cause I am proud to be, that language gives the pride and identity of who I am. Nothing’s more.

I got scholarship in Senior High school. It was like a miracle that no body believed that I got in to that scholarship. I was a smoker, rebel, breaking the rules was my hobby, hanging out without stupid permision letter, and sleep in the small bamboo-based house that people named it as Saung. God had shown a bright destiny for me, with all these impossibilities and confident, I entered an new international school with full scholarship in Bogor. It’s a weird at the first time. Meeting all mates from 24 different provinces from over Indonesia. I met with Acehnese, papuanese, Lampungnese, Makassarnese and many others. Talking about their names, they are having the great name. Lukas Jhon, Achmad with c, I barely impressed, yet this Achmad is using C that makes cooler.

I introduced Acep. They feel ordinary when I mention my name. One time, I’ve had a friend from America that can’t even pronounced my name clearly. They can once, and split a seconds they asked me again how to pronounce. By then, I’ve met so many foreigners from that school, many great people and I started to realize that my name is representing my own race, Sundanesse. I thought of having a journey to introduce the Sundanesse to the world only by introducing my name. Hence, with all this long random writing, I just wanna say that your name given by your parents has something behind its meaning, its destiny. Be grateful of you if you have a modern name, but I am sorry to say you are having the mainstream one, or the polite word, ordinary. Be grateful of you that have very strong traditional meaning of your name. It is a gift given by God that we are chosen to spread the uniqueness of our name to the world. Hahahahah.
Once again, I am Acep Kholid. I welcome you to this site of unknowingly ordinary personal site.
