Something We Can Learn from Bias Media
After
an unprecedented rally in Jakarta last Friday, my timeline now colored by the
people who are really sick about some particular medias that found (which they
argue) provocative and bias.
I could
say our media has already been bias since the last presidential election and
nothing new for me. However, choosing to eliminate any particular media just
because any arguable bias does not really make any better.
To
me, that is how the media rising awareness for the people about that issue they
come up with.
Let’s
take an example, A TV creates news that show the rally was going anarchy
because of a stranger that sniffing into the rally and created undeniable
chaos. At the same time, another B TV claimed that the chaos provoked by the police that
pull the trigger of the tear gas, and cause that riot.
Most
people will agree to the news in accordance with what they believe in. Once the
news that come up against theirs, they hardly to accept that and even claim
that the news only created for advantaging one party and cost another. Even shouting
that the news is completely wrong and stupid.
The
reality is, that most people are still having no idea about the real fact and
stand with their belief is still subjectively questionable. It could be affected by their
environment or in most cases is influenced by the one that they claim more
ideal to follow or even they choose themselves with optimism. They choose
themselves.
It’s
all coming to their personal opinion that they believe in.
Now,
how could bias media be possibly rising awareness for the people?
I
would start with myself, how I am aware towards recent condition because of
that media stuff. I see many medias are intentionally bias or broadcasting
issue that clearly advantage one part while insulting another party. It
triggers me to dig a detail information and reliable data to know what is
really happening. At least I read another news that I claimed neutral since the
last presidential election, I discuss with my friend, the expert if possible and even read a brief
insight about the history. I encourage myself to be aware by looking another
point of view. If you question my resources, I tell you they are plenty of
reliable resources on this earth that you can easily click on it. Thanks to the
technology for that.
What
an astonishing situation for me, most people confidently support their arguments by citing
from the news that clearly provocative and newly-situational website that have
a very strange name. Why I said so, cause the website is only depicting the
current viral situation, when another viral issue come up, maybe they change their name as well.
If
you said the media are paid to create the news that only useful for any
particular people, then you are correct. Most media that people consumed are
commercial. Most updated one is commercial, most catchy news is commercial, most
entertaining is the commercial one.
Because that is what they are doing. Making money from the media, from huge
traffic they made. If they aren't, they will suffer from bankruptcy.
If you are really sick about that,
just don’t open their website, do not watch their channel, then technically
their traffic is decreasing. That is how we actually express our disappointment
through a good way I guess. They will eventually fall down.
If
you want to search for media that is not money-oriented, just take a look at
the government media. Their website, their television channel. Do you find
yourself interested in them? Or are you frequently watching the government
channel? If I ask myself, I am afraid no. Because their goals are not
profit-oriented. That institution would not suffer from bankruptcy if they are
not making any single cents in their broadcast. They still
get budget from the country. But
if I ask, does that media are useful? Indeed, they are unarguably very useful. Different story
if you want to relive the era of Orde Baru, when government control all medias
and at the end causing very historic riot and reveal our country’s flaws.
That
is how the media raise my awareness. If you still fighting for accusing media
for the issue that you against with, then implicitly you try to reduce your
awareness. ( I don't say you are wrong :)). Just imagine if there is no kind of that media, we just only be
proud of choosing that media as our only reference. We are not encouraged to
dig more data, read more perspectives and share the fact that you earn. Trust me, it creates more confident
for us if we research ourselves about that particular issue.
The
fierce competition initiates variety way to keep alive. Even doing the wrong
thing for the right one. In this millennial era, we can’t only rely on one
point of view. Otherwise, it just can lead us to the fact that not really suit
with ourselves, our dignity. The more data we read, the more facts we earn, it
clearly tells us where that media is going. Let’s be wise to earn information
from the media.
